Not Just Numbers: The Human Cost of Delayed Rare Disease Therapies

The recent "Hands Off" protests have resonated deeply with many Americans, myself included. At a time when I feared that the nation might remain passive in the face of the current administration's actions, these demonstrations have been a powerful testament to collective resistance.

On April 5, 2025, millions across all 50 states participated in over 1,200 rallies organized by the Hands Off movement. These protests were a unified stand against what many perceive as authoritarian overreach and the dismantling of democratic institutions by President Donald Trump's administration. The movement brought together more than 150 progressive groups, including MoveOn and Indivisible, to oppose policies that threaten jobs, privacy, and essential services like Medicaid and Social Security. Vanity Fair+2Vogue+2The Guardian+2

The breadth of participation was astounding. Major cities like New York, Washington D.C., and Los Angeles saw massive turnouts, but what struck me most was the engagement in traditionally conservative areas. Towns such as Bozeman, Montana; Holland, Michigan; and Topeka, Kansas, witnessed significant gatherings, illustrating a nationwide call for change that transcends political affiliations. New York MagazineVogue

Public figures also played a crucial role in amplifying the movement's message. Representatives Jamie Raskin, Ilhan Omar, and Maxwell Frost addressed crowds, emphasizing the importance of continued activism to safeguard democratic values. Their presence underscored the urgency of the moment and the need for collective action. The Guardian+2Vogue+2The Guardian+2

International solidarity further highlighted the global implications of our domestic policies. Cities like London, Paris, Berlin, and Stockholm hosted their own demonstrations, signaling a shared concern for the direction in which our nation is headed. Hands Off Uhuru+3Time+3New York Magazine+3

These protests have rekindled my faith in the American people's commitment to justice and democracy. Witnessing such widespread mobilization reassures me that we are not standing idly by but are actively challenging policies that undermine our core values. The Hands Off movement serves as a powerful reminder that collective action can and does make a difference.
